Children & Young People

There are many factors that influence children’s mental health. Protecting mental health at an early age is vitally important to ensure future mental wellbeing and resilience.

Supporting Children & Young People

Supporting children and young people is absolutely essential. According to Public Health Scotland, most mental health conditions emerge before the age of 24, with half of all difficulties already established by just 14 years old. Childhood and adolescence are therefore critical periods where the right support can make a lasting difference. A wide range of influences—such as family life, school pressures, social environments, and broader societal factors—shape young people’s mental health. By prioritising early intervention, we can help build the foundations for lifelong wellbeing and resilience.

Sadly, stigma often prevents children from reaching out. The fear of being dismissed, judged, or treated differently can silence them at the very moment they most need support. That’s why creating safe, non-judgemental spaces is so important—spaces where children and young people feel heard, valued, and respected. Whether in schools, communities, or families, giving them the opportunity to talk openly and without fear can reduce isolation, encourage early help-seeking, and ultimately prevent problems from escalating.

When we listen and respond with compassion, we show children that their feelings matter. In doing so, we not only protect their current mental health but also strengthen their ability to face challenges in the future.
